Mind/Body connection: how emotions can affect your body

Hello beautiful soul!

Have you ever considered that emotions are signals, that your body is telling you that something needs to be looked at?

Our emotions are linked to our bodies, allowing them to have a significant impact on our emotional and physical well-being. 

When we become aware of which suppressed emotions are affecting our physical body, we can start listening to these signals and therefore bring harmony to our emotional and physical health. 

In fact, feeling an emotion is not just a psychological experience, we experience it with our whole body.

I am reminded of a client, who many years ago had a healing session with me. Her left knee was bothering her to the point that walking became almost a difficult task to achieve. During the session, she shared with me that 20 years prior she had an argument with somebody. That argument left an imprint in her subconscious mind (a trauma) which she carried on her physical body (on her knee) for many years. With the information she gave me, I helped her to release the trauma related to the argument, and from that moment onwards, the knee pain was gone. 

The way you think, feel, and act has an effect on your bodyand every ache, pain, or other physical struggles, affects your mind. Your body tries to tell you something is wrong whenever you are stressed, anxious, or unhappy, interesting, isn't it?

The following physical signs can signal that there is an imbalance in your emotional health:

  • Constipation
  • Extreme tiredness
  • General aches and pains
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Palpitations (the feeling that your heart is racing)
  • Stiff neck
  • Upset stomach
  • Weight gain or loss 

Can you recognise your emotions?

We all know what they are called (anxiety, sadness, fear, etc.), yet recognising the emotions we feel is not easy at times.

For example, anger and sadness seem very different on the surface, yet in everyday reality, they may be hiding behind each other.

There is no such thing as a positive or negative emotion; its value depends on the intensity and individual sensitivity to what one is feeling.

Anger, for example, is deeply therapeutic and liberating if expressed in the right way, just as love can be an alienating experience, and happiness can turn into madness and exaltation.

Emotional quality depends on the intensity, and level of awareness through which we experience these emotions.

Close your eyes for a few minutes and ask yourself 'what emotions do I feel?'

Anger? Sadness? Anxiety? Shame? Guilt? 

What can we learn from emotions?

As we have already read, emotions are never negative or positive: we consider them as such and often do so on the basis of what we feel or what happens in our lives while we are experiencing it.

In reality, emotions can express a blockage. The real message behind these emotions needs to come to the surface, which is why keeping in tune with the body means becoming able to understand the physical manifestations and to pick up on the signs: what are they communicating and what meaning do they have?

- Anger

Origin: a feeling of powerlessness and injustice.

What does it hide? Determination.

Message: become aware of your feeling of powerlessness, what can you do to let go of control? What injustice happened in your past?

- Fear

Origin: negative thoughts about a future event.

What does it hide? Love.

Message: Don't be afraid of being afraid. What would you do if you weren't afraid? In which part of your body do you feel it? 

- Shame

Origin: inadequacy, low self-esteem.

What does it hide? Self-esteem.

Message: In which parts of the body do I feel wrong? How can I accept and love who I am? Make a list of your most important achievements and relive them with your mind.

- Guilt

Origin: negative judgement of something you did.

What does it hide? Forgiveness.

Message: Let go of the past. Practice self-forgiveness. Cultivate self-acceptance and self-love.

- Sadness

Origin: negative judgment about a past or future event.

What does it hide? Gratitude.

Message: Embrace change and accept that existence is a continuous flow. How can I feel whole?

- Anxiety

Origin: Fear of losing something, focusing on the past and future.

What does it hide? Peace.

Message: Focus on the now. Practice self-love and learn to let go and be in the moment.

- Jealousy

Origin: a sense of possession, feeling insecure.

What does it hide? Love and self-esteem.

Message: Know your worth. 

Emotions and the body

According to the principles of ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine, each emotion corresponds to different parts of the body, influencing the health of each organ. 

- Joy is stored in the heart

The heart is the seat of life. Joy immediately brings to mind the rush to the heart that we feel in moments of great intensity, yet this energy can also become a state of over-excitement.

When we feel agitated, "the heart beats faster" and thoughts are difficult to put in order.

- Anger affects the liver

The liver takes care of cell nutrition, metabolises what enters our body, and eliminates waste. Its function as a filter, on a symbolic level, suggests the balance between the input of what is good for us and the output of what is not.

Have you ever used the phrase "I just can't digest it" when referring to an event or people you find hard to accept? 

The liver helps to metabolise, and on an emotional level, we need time to metabolise, to dissolve what is likely to be indigestible.

Anger can be a real poison and when it stews for years it slowly intoxicates our thoughts.

However, let us not forget that anger, strongly linked to survival, is also the response dictated by despair, the extreme attempt at defence and what can sometimes bring us back to deep desires, stimulating the courage to act.

How can we release the energy of anger? Start by telling yourself honestly, what makes you feel frustrated and powerless: accepting what emotions you feel is the first step to stop feeling that weight on your stomach area.

- Fear affects the kidneys

Fear blocks the circulation of vital energy: in fact, we feel paralysed when we are afraid. The kidneys help to filter the blood, eliminate waste and regulate blood pressure. 

Fear, like anger, is an adaptive response of the organism linked to survival, but also to the fear of being abandoned and hurt. Everyone wants to feel safe.

Do you feel safe? 

- Sadness and grief affect the lungs and large intestine

According to Traditional Chinese medicine, through the heart, sadness affects the lungs: the organ that allows us to breathe and live.

Sadness can be related to excessive mental effort: it happens when we torture ourselves with analyses and reflections that risk becoming obsessive thoughts. 

The emotion connected with the large intestine is similar to that of the lungs: sadness and grief. If there is constipation, which meant that the bowels are trapped in the large intestine, it is believed that there is a difficulty to “let go” of something.
